Ein Verteidigungsminister verplaudert sich gemein

Im Oktober 2001 gab Donald Rumsfeld ein Interview, das folgende Passage enthält:
It is a truth that a terrorist can attack any time, any place, using any technique and it's physically impossible to defend at every time and every place against every conceivable technique. Here we're talking about plastic knives and using an American Airlines flight filed with our citizens, and the missile to damage this building and similar (inaudible) that damaged the World Trade Center. The only way to deal with this problem is by taking the battle to the terrorists, wherever they are, and dealing with them. (Quelle, Hervorhebung von mir)

Es handelt sich um ein Transkript eines mitgeschnittenen Interviews. An insgesamt sechs Stellen des Interviews erscheint der Hinweis “inaudible” - ein Hinweis auf die schlechte Audio-Qualität des Bandes.
Der hervorgehobene Satz wurde ein Grundpfeiler des sogenannten ‘missile hoax’:
Meyssan and Rumsfeld manufacture the missile hoax
The "no Boeing hit the Pentagon" claim is the most important and widespread 9/11 hoax. [...] Rummy’s ‘missile’ remark was bait to set up the ‘no plane hoax’. (Quelle)

Im Vorwort des Meyssan-Buches ‘Pentagate; Foto - und Fragenkatalog zu einer Inszenierung’ von 2003 nutzt der rechtsextreme Verleger Pierre Krebs das gezielt verkürzte Zitat zur Einstimmung auf den ‘missile hoax’:
Im Pentagate belegt der Autor mit Hilfe von Pierre-Henri Bunel, daß es in der Tat ein Missile war, das die Explosion im Pentagon verursacht hat, wie es auch Rumsfeld anläßlich eines Gesprächs erwogen hat: ”Wir sprechen hier (...) von dem Missile, mit dem das Gebäude [Pentagon] zerstört werden sollte (...) (Pentagate, S. 5)

Bereits im Vorwort des Buches lernt man also die Kunst des selektiven Zitierens kennen und man muss sich für einen Standpunkt entscheiden:
1) Offizielle Perspektive (‘OVT’): Nichts rätselhaftes. Rumsfeld hat lediglich beschrieben, wie eine Passagiermaschine - einer Rakete ähnlich - als todbringendes Geschoss mißbraucht wurde. Daher bleibt dieses Transkript mit diesem Zitat selbstverständlich weiterhin online verfügbar. 
2) Alternative Perspektive (‘VT’): Rumsfeld hat zugegeben, daß eine Rakete eingesetzt wurde, um das Pentagon zu treffen. Das Pentagon veröffentlicht dieses “Geständnis”, weil.....?

Die Bedeutung des Begriffe “missile” reicht von “Geschoss” über “Flugkörper” bis zur “Rakete”.
Darüberhinaus spricht Rumsfeld explizit von einer American Airlines-Passagiermaschine, die benutzt wurde. In Meyssans Buch erscheint das Zitat  genau um diese Erwähnung verkürzt. Wozu wurde das Flugzeug benutzt, wenn nicht als Fluggeschoss bzw. als ‘Rakete’ (also bildlich gesprochen)?

Die Logik des zweiten Ansatzes bleibt hingegen undurchsichtig.

Tauscht man in dem qualitativ schlechten Audio-Mitschnitt zudem ein Wörtchen aus - statt “and the missile” “as the missile” - erhält man ein Zitat, das es in ähnlicher Form mehrmals gab:

Rumsfeld: However, I don’t recall receiving anything in the months prior to 9/11 that suggested terrorists might take commercial airliners and use them as missiles to fly into buildings like the World Trade Center Towers or the Pentagon.  (Quelle, Hervorhebung von mir)

Condoleezza Rice: [...] that they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile. [...] (Quelle, Hervorhebung von mir)
 

Im September 2004 soll auch das interview-führende ‘Parade Magazin’ diese simple Erklärung veröffentlicht haben:
The Internet, too, is a potent tool for spreading conspiracy theories. Parade found this out after Lyric Wallwork Winik interviewed Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in Oct. 2001.  In a transcript of Winik's interview with Rumsfeld, which was published on the Department of Defense's website, Rumsfeld seemed to indicate that the Pentagon was hit by a missile on 9/11 instead of a plane.  It turns out that a transcription error led to the confusion, but conspiracy theorists latched onto Rumsfeld's supposed admission and spread it over the Internet. (Parade Magazine, September 4, 2004)

Die respektable Site Cooperative Research hat den Transkriptionsfehler entsprechend lokalisiert: 
However, in 2004 Parade will say that a “transcription error led to the confusion, but conspiracy theorists latched onto Rumsfeld’s supposed admission and spread it over the Internet.” Although the transcription error is not specified, if the word “and” is replaced by the word “as” the statement becomes “[…] using an American Airlines flight filled with our citizens as the missile to damage this building.”

Aber vergeblich, das Rumsfeld-Zitat bildet bis zum heutigen Tage den Grundstein der Missile-Version, auch bekannt als ‘missile hoax’.
Auch der Pentagon-Part innerhalb des Videos LOOSE CHANCE 2 (in den Jahren 2005/2006 mit Riesenerfolg veröffentlicht) beginnt mit diesem Zitat zur Einstimmung.
